1. Foot Care
Foot Care..... Your condition of your feet should also be considered an important part of personal health care. In addition to bearing the weight of your body, your feet are subjected to the hard surfaces of our society. 98 percent of the time we walk and stand on unnaturally hard surfaces; they sap your energy and cause blood and fluids to pool in your legs---resulting in tired, sore and swollen feet.

The use of medically designed insoles or heel pads have been effective in reducing this tired, worn-out feeling at the end of the day. For those who suffer from heel spurs, heel spur pads can offer comfort.

Toenails that grow improperly into the flesh can become infected and cause pain. To prevent this problem, use a good quality nail clipper that’s strong enough to cut through the thickest of nails; you have several choices of nail clippers and other footcare instruments.

Dry, cracked heels are one of the most common foot problems. Special creams are available to soften the skin and assist in a quick healing process; they help peel dry, dead skin to allow moisture to penetrate.

And for the diabetic, feet are exceptionally vulnerable to infection due to reduced blood circulation and the loss of feeling. To help in preventing skin problems and complications, it’s very important to practice preventative care.

2. Bladder Control - Alarms
Alarms.....A child with a nighttime bed-wetting problem should have a medical examination to determine whether any physical problem exists. In most cases, the problem of bed-wetting is the result of extremely sound sleep. The deep sleep makes it very difficult for a child to overcome bed-wetting without assistance. Many years ago, it was learned that by causing an alarm to sound at the instant wetting began, a conditioning process was begun. The child learned to control him- or herself, and repetition helps create the desired action. A bed-wetting alarm is a very simple device that straps to the wrist like a watch. The alarm has a low-voltage battery with a connection to the pajama bottom. When the child urinates during the night, the pajama bottom gets wet and makes a contact while sounds the alarm on the child’s wrist. This alarm is loud enough to wake the child.

The principle of bed-wetting alarms is well-known, and when properly used is proven effective in about 75 percent of the cases studied. Medical research shows that children with an unchecked bed-wetting problem at age 4 or 5 will have this persistent problem for years afterward.

3. Bladder Control - Treatment
Treatment.....If you are one of the millions of women who suffer from loss of bladder control, you need not feel alone or helpless. The involuntary loss of urine can cause physical problems such as skin irritation, and psychological problems such as embarrassment, depression and isolation. Often, individuals are too ashamed or embarrassed to seek help.

There are three primary forms of loss of bladder control. Stress incontinence results in loss of urine from such activities as laughing, coughing, sneezing, bending, running and aerobics. The underlying cause is weakness of the pelvic floor muscles. Many younger women experience these symptoms when pelvic floor muscles are damaged, weakened and stretched after childbirth.

Urge incontinence is loss of urine because of over activity of the bladder muscle. The symptom of this type of bladder control loss is the inability to delay passing urine when the sensation of urge is felt. It can happen at unexpected times and places.

Mixed incontinence is loss of urine when there’s a combination of stress and urge symptoms. There are effective treatments to build up the muscle tone of the pelvic floor. One method is the use of weighted vaginal cones, called vaginal weight training. These weights come in sets of five, ranging from 20 to 70 grams. At the start, weight number one is used, inserted into the vagina like a tampon.

The goal is to try hold it for ten minutes, twice a day. Once this is accomplished, weight number two is used in the same manner...and then so on through weight number five. When number five is mastered, pelvic floor muscle tone is restored.

If you’re unable to use the vaginal weights, there is another alternative called pelvic floor muscle stimulation.

4. Home Blood Pressure Monitoring - Home
Home......Home blood pressure monitoring can be safe and accurate. Various units are available with many features. Digital readout units tend to be the most popular because of their simplicity. The self-inflating type is fully automatic---it fills the cuff with air, and releases pressure when the measurement is complete; it’s designed with one-button operation and error indicators to alert and assist the user. This type of unit is helpful for the user who may have poor hand strength, and may find squeezing the inflation bulb difficult. Pulse rate and blood pressure are displayed.

Another popular unit, and somewhat less expensive, is the digital readout unit that inflates manually. The pre-formed cuff is easy to put on and determines both blood pressure and pulse rate. The unit inflates manually but deflates automatically, and blood pressure and pulse rates are displayed on a clear easy-to-read digital display. These units run on batteries.

Finger blood pressure units are another type of unit---lightweight, portable and convenient for blood pressure monitoring anywhere. They automatically inflate and deflate, but there’s a larger potential for error since these units must always be held at the level of the heart when monitoring.

Gauge blood pressure units can also be used. These are accurate and fairly inexpensive, but require alot more teaching. They must also be used with a stethoscope, which will add to the cost of monitoring. Also, gauge units may be difficult for the hearing impaired, since careful listening for the systolic and diastolic points is required while the cuff is manually deflated.

5. Home Blood Pressure Monitoring - Stethoscopes
Stethoscopes......Home blood pressure monitoring can be safe and accurate. A complete range of stethoscopes is available for every type of user. The quality of the stethoscope needed is determined by the purpose for which it’s intended. An inexpensive model is likely best for someone who simply wants to monitor blood pressure. The health care professional working with the cardiac or extremely ill patient would require the finest stethoscope with superior acoustics and unsurpassed quality and performance.

These high quality cardiology stethoscopes have exceptional qualities: a floating diaphragm assures high acoustic sensitivity, the two tubes are molded together to eliminate noise from tubing rubbing together, and the non-chill rim on the chest piece adds to patient comfort and eliminates the need for warming it up. Also, tube length is variable...and various eartips are available to assure individual fit and an ideal acoustic seal. An alternative is the Sprague Rappaport, or dual-tubed stethoscope; it’s a more economical choice yet still delivers good acoustics.

The chest piece is another consideration; it can be sized for adult, pediatric or infant use...and some models have interchangeable chest pieces.

Stethoscope colors are also a matter of choice: from traditional grey and black to contemporary colors such as red, green and pink.

The thermometer is another health care instrument. Traditional glass thermometers---an economical way to take a temperature---are still available but have been updated by some very high-tech designs.

There are three ways of taking a temperature with a glass thermometer: orally, rectally or under the arm. The oral thermometer has a longer bulb and can also be used under the arm, while the rectal thermometer has a short, stubby bulb. Both can be acquired in centigrade or Fahrenheit degrees. Whatever your choice, the purchase of a case is recommended to help reduce accidental breakage.

6. Home Blood Pressure Monitoring - Thermometers
Thermometers......The thermometer is another health care instrument.

Digital thermometers offer accuracy, reliability and simplicity. The L.C.D display on the digital thermometer makes it much easier to read than a glass thermometer. The power source is a small battery, much like you’d find in a watch, and the thermometer shuts off on its own after use. Oral or rectal measurements can be taken in centigrade or Fahrenheit, and disposable plastic covers are available for use in clinical settings.

Recently, another high-tech thermometer arrived on the market. The Timpanic (?) or ear thermometer is now the fastest, safest, most accurate type of thermometer available. Precise measurement is done by infrared technology. A picture of the infrared heat generated by the eardrum is taken and then displayed---all in one second! The ear is an ideal temperature-taking site since the eardrum shares its blood supply with the temperature control center of the brain. The ear canal is a protected cavity, and unaffected by environment factors. Because of the convenience and comfort of this type of thermometer, it’s ideal for infants, children, adults and seniors. Even a sleeping patient will not be disturbed during the procedure. Disposable ear covers are used with the ear thermometer, reducing the possibility of cross-infection. And it eliminates the risks inherent to the glass thermometer: breakage, bowel puncture, and mercury ingestion.

7. Home Blood Pressure Monitoring
Home Blood Pressure Monitoring ......Another measurement that helps determine your body’s condition is the pulse rate. Pulse rate varies according to the body strength and age of the individual. Remembering your pulse rate at rest will assist you in using it as a standard in keeping track of changes in your health.

Lack of exercise is one of the leading causes of heart and blood vessel ailments, diabetes and back pain. An exercise routine is helpful in preventing these problems. There are people, however, who have died due to excessive exercise; your pulse rate is a good standard to use as an index of the intensity of your workout. Exercise should always be performed under the guidance of a medical specialist or trainer.

If you exercise as vigorously as possible, you’ll usually reach your maximum pulse rate. It’s best for your amount of exercise to have a target range of 70 to 80 percent of your maximum pulse rate; if your exercise is too light, you will not improve the functioning of your heart. Try to maintain pulse beat within this target range during exercise.

Measure your pulse rate immediately after exercising and then again in five minutes. The gradual return of your pulse rate to your rest rate is called the pulse rate recovery. If your pulse rate is more than 120 beats per minute after five minutes, your exercise routine is too strenuous. Pulse rate recovery becomes quicker for people who exercise over a long period of time.

There are three types of pulse meter: chest type monitor, finger type and ear type. They may have several features to help you exercise to your potential without letting you overdo it. An upper limit alarm may be set in some meters to sound if you exercise too strenuously. A lower limit alarm can be set to sound should you not be reaching your minimum exercise load. And, a built-in stop watch times your exercise periods.

8. Impotence
Impotence.....Impotence is a common problem that affects men of all ages. The causes of impotence fall into several categories: psychological, trauma, disease, hormone imbalance, surgery and use of drugs. There are a number of treatments available.

One treatment involves the use of a vacuum constriction system. It works by placing a cylinder with an attached pump over the penis, and activating the pump. The pump creates a vacuum which draws blood into the penis, creating an erection. A constriction ring is then placed at the base of the penis to maintain the erection by keeping blood in the penis. Consultation with a physician is advisable.

9. Pain Management and Muscle Stimulation - Pain
Pain......What is pain? Pain is your body’s warning system intended to alert you to injury. However, long-lasting, persistent pain no longer warns us. This chronic pain serves no apparent purpose. For those who live with chronic pain, a normal life can be impossible, especially if medication is involved. With the amount and type of medication needed to control pain, serious side effects can develop, including nausea, drowsiness, impaired judgment, allergic reaction and potential addiction. You can control your pain with transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, commonly called “Tens”, and reduce or eliminate the need for pain medication.

How does this work? A small, light, battery-powered Tens unit sends tiny electrical impulses to nerves through electrodes places on your body. The result is a soothing, tingling feeling that reduces or eliminates your pain. Tens activates your body’s pain control mechanism to produce its own natural pain relievers. These substances, known as endorphins, can give you relief from pain even when the unit is turned off. Tens is safe, comfortable, simple and non-addictive.

Can Tens help you? There are several benefits of Tens therapy: it can eliminate or greatly reduce your pain; reduce the amount of medication required to control your pain; make you feel more like participating in recovery activities such as exercise programs or physiotherapy; allow you to sleep better; improve your posture and movement; allow you to return to a normal, productive lifestyle and behavior pattern; and help you regain a sense of control over your life.

Tens has proven effective in controlling the following chronic conditions: lower back pain, neck pain, migraine headaches, amputation and phantom limb pain, radiating leg pain, diabetic neuropathy, cancer pain...and acute conditions such as shingles, labor pain, post-operative pain, muscle and joint pain, bursitis, tendonitis, menstrual cramps, sports injuries and whiplash.

A prescription from your doctor or physiotherapist is required. Your physiotherapist will work with you to determine the correct settings and electrode placements that will provide optimal relief of your pain symptoms. Tens units can be purchased or rented.

10. Pain Management&Muscle Stimulation - Female Pelvic
Female pelvic......Pelvic floor stimulation is another form of electrical stimulation. If you’re one of the millions of women who suffer from loss of bladder control, you need not feel alone or helpless. The involuntary loss of urine can cause physical problems such as skin irritation, and psychological problems such as embarrassment, depression and isolation. Often, individuals are too ashamed to seek help.

Pelvic floor stimulation is a safe, painless, drug-free, non-surgical treatment which delivers safe electrical impulses to the pelvic floor muscles. This stimulation causes muscle contractions to happen involuntarily. The continuous contraction and relaxation of the muscles cause them to build strength and tone. The contractions of the bladder that are unwanted are also eliminated. The length of treatment can range from a few weeks to several months, depending on the cause of bladder control loss and the condition of the pelvic floor muscles.

Treatment is by prescription, and stimulation is usually done for 15 minutes twice a day, every other day. Home units are available for purchase or rental, but the probe itself must be bought since it’s inserted vaginally like a tampon.

11. Pain Management&Muscle Stimulation -Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation...... In the process of rehabilitation, muscle stimulation may be used for a variety of applications such as relaxation of muscle spasm, and the prevention or slowing down of muscle loss when the muscle is not being used; for instance, loss of muscle tissue can happen when a cast is worn for an extended period of time. Other causes of muscle loss are: after a stroke, or paralysis. Muscle stimulation can maintain or increase movement of a joint, increase blood circulation, or help retrain a muscle. The use of a small portable muscle stimulator sends mild electrical current through an electrode which is applied to the skin. The current activates specific nerves and muscles, or muscle groups, in patients who cannot or will not contract these muscles on their own.

The physiotherapist may prescribe muscle stimulation as part of the rehabilitation program. The muscle stimulator may be rented so treatment can be done at home.

After hip or knee surgery, a device called Continuous Passive Motion---or C.P.M---may be prescribed. Medical research has shown that it’s important to keep joints moving after surgery or injury. Since this would be impossible for the patient do on his or her own on a 24-hour basis for at least a week after surgery, the C.P.M machine was developed to do this movement for the patient. The benefits of this movement include decreased pain, better circulation, decreased swelling, less joint stiffness, and faster healing of bones and cartilage. The physiotherapist sets the machine...then it supports the entire leg and slowly bends and stretches the hip, knee and ankle. The unit may be rented for home use, allowing a shorter hospital stay.

12. Skin Care
Skin Care..... Your skin is one of the most important parts of your body; like the heart and kidneys, it must be considered a vital organ. Skin protects the body against bacterial invasions, prevents moisture loss, regulates body temperature, gives you a sense of touch and much more.

The skin is comprised of three layers. At the base of the top layer, new skin cells are generated, and travel up to the skin surface to replace old, worn-out cells. When these cells are being made it’s important for them to be moisturized so that when they travel to the skin surface, the skin will have a healthy, soft, supple look. In our Alberta climate, we’re continually exposed to a very dry environment, and this dry air robs our skin of essential moisture.

Skin and hair should be treated with products that are protective, corrective and constructive---products specifically formulated well within the normal pH range. For severely dry skin such as callused feet, a product containing urea is helpful, since urea is an excellent moisturizer. However, if the urea cannot get below the dead, dry, hard-callused skin it will not be effective. A product containing lactic acid as well as urea is ideal; lactic acid is a mil skin-peeling ingredient which will help in gradually stripping off the dead, callused skin cells.

Bath additives can be very beneficial in helping re-moisturize skin. However, there should be no greasy feeling on the skin after using the product, and it should contain no perfumes, petrolatum or mineral oil.

Dry skin is itchy skin. Scratching itchy skin causes the skin to thicken and become even drier, and the cycle starts: more itching and more scratching. This can create skin breakdown, and even infection.

13. Sports Medicine - Knees, etc
Kness, etc......Sports injuries frequently affect the knees, ankles, elbows and wrists. Part of effective treatment often includes the use of various braces and supports.

For the knee, there are many types of supports, depending on the individual need. These braces can protect, stabilize and control a range of motion. Knee supports are available in light support right up to more complex models, such as hinged knee braces which support the knee medially and laterally. These supports are manufactured in elastic, nylon and neoprene materials.

Ankle supports provide both protection and prevention. There are many different types on the market including elastic models, elastic with plastic, stays, neoprene, and lace-ups with Achilles straps. This Achilles strap design helps with weight bearing and provides unequaled protection against injury. All ankle braces are, of course, anatomically designed for fit and comfort.

The most common injuries to the elbow are Tennis Elbow and Tendonitis. Both are caused by stress, vibration and shock on the elbow join. Tennis Elbow sleeves and bands will absorb vibrations, plus provide support and heat to the muscles to prevent re-injury and help with healing. These sleeves are available in elastic and neoprene.

Two very common injuries that affect the hand and wrist are Tendonitis and Carpo-Tunnel Syndrome, and there are a number of brace and supports to aid the healing process. Wrist supports are made of elastic, canvas, and neoprene, and can be fitted for most individuals to provide excellent stability.

14. Sports Medicine - Heat and Cold
Heat & Cold.....Aside from braces and supports, hot and cold compress therapy has become a recognized medical technique for the successful treatment of most injuries. Heat is used primarily in cases of chronic ailments, applied to the affected area to increase blood flow to the surrounding tissues. Heat therapy helps relieve chronic pain, increases blood flow, decreases joint stiffness, and relieves muscle spasms and cramps. There are several heating devices available: moist heat packs for moist heat relief, electric moist heat pads, infrared heating pads for deep-heat penetration, and hot water bottles.

A few common cold therapy items are instant ice packs, ice bags, and reusable gel cold packs.

15. Sports Medicine - Insoles
Insoles..…To relieve foot pain and reduce backache, insoles are often prescribed. Insoles absorb and dampen the strike of the heel on the ground, cushioning the foot and equalizing underfoot pressure. They’re good for running, walking, skiing, or almost any form of fitness activity. Insoles work well in work shoes and in everyday wear, and are available in various sizes with or without arch support. Some insoles have a metatarsal support, others feature heel cushion, and still others are designed for the relief of heel spurs.

16. Sports Medicine - Taping
Taping.....Sports tape is very popular for use as injury protection and prevention, and a wide variety of athletic tapes is available. These tapes offer varying strengths, widths and uses...and come in hypo-allergenic, zinc oxide, elastic and porous. The width varies from tape to tape to suit any body part and shape. The strength of the tape and its adhesiveness also vary to suit specific needs. When using sports tape, it’s wise to protect the skin from the adhesive with pro-wrap and sport balms. Pro-wrap acts as a barrier between the tape and skin to reduce friction and to maintain the integrity of the skin. Sport balms and a taping base also help with skin protection.

Some of the uses for sport tapes include supporting sprains and strains, helping reduce pain and swelling, and in injury prevention.

20. Rental Program - Canes
Canes.....When you feel the need for a cane to increase your stability and safety, there are many options you should consider. A basic wooden cane is the most economical choice, but be sure the cane you choose is not compromised in quality---even the low-priced canes should be made of top quality hardwoods. Also, consider the diameter of the shaft when selecting the right cane for you; a 3/4 inch diameter is lighter and provides enough support for most ladies, while a 1 inch diameter---offering more durability and greater strength---is suitable for men and for those who weigh more than average. A suction grip tip should be included regardless which cane you choose. Any cane you select must be properly measured specifically for you, and this usually means cutting it; a cane that’s too long or too short for you can create problems such as instability or shoulder pain.

Always try a few different hand styles to ensure your total comfort when holding the cane; choice include t-handles, derby handles, traditional curved handles, foam-padded handles, and handles that are specially suited for the arthritic hand. Also available are various wood choices including walnut, black, light and mahogany. Aluminum canes are another option. They’re strong, light and can be easily adjusted using the push-button mechanism.

Choices include bronze, black and silver, with various handle styles.

If you travel, a folding cane offers the convenience of quick and easy assembly and disassembly. And if more stability is what you’re looking for, you may wish to choose a cane with 3 or 4 legs.

21. Rental Program - Crutches
Crutches......When you need a pair of crutches, your options will include purchase or rental. If you’re going to use crutches for only a very short period of time, renting would be the most economical choice. However, if you’re going to need crutches for a few months, buying an economy pair of wooden crutches would be a smart choice. If your usage will continue for several months, aluminum crutches are both economical and durable, yet lightweight and easy to handle.

Crutch cushions for under the arms and sponge hand grips will make your crutches more comfortable to use; cushioning reduces pressure and fatigue, and absorbs shock. Larger crutch tip add stability and longer wear.

When the use of crutches is long-term, consider crutches made for that specific reason: models with curved tips provide superior contact with the floor, even on wet or slippery surfaces. Uniquely designed handgrips provide even weight bearing, and a adjustable handgrip position ensures correct elbow flexion to reduce fatigue.

Forearm crutches have a design that places your weight directly over the tip of the crutch, which provides the greatest stability. Arthritic crutches have a comfortable padded armrest than can be angled for your complete comfort.

22. Rental Program - Winter Walking
Winter Walking......Winter walking can be a safe, easy and enjoyable experience by increasing your freedom and independence with a pair of detachable, anti-ski safety soles. They’re the practical solution to the age-old problem of traction in slippery conditions of ice, snow and slush. The safety soles’ extraordinary grip is particularly useful for postal carriers, meter readers, paper carriers, delivery people, hunters, surveyors, emergency personnel, seniors, farmers, construction workers and maintenance workers. They’re a must for winter walking, jogging, ice fishing, snow shoveling and many other outdoor activities. You can choose from various styles---some are put on just as you would toe rubbers, while others are a complete sole that attaches with Velcro straps. With any choice, you’ll find the quality lightweight material stays flexible and assures long wear.

If you use a cane or crutches, ice grip attachments can be installed easily for added safety when walking on ice or snow. Ice grips fit all standard crutches and canes, and can be conveniently flipped up when not in use. The five super-gripping prongs grab the ice to maximize cane stability and reduce your risk of falling.

23. Maternity Care
Maternity Care......Every expectant or nursing mother learns the joys of motherhood come hand-in-hand with a few personal discomforts.

Breast shields are ultra-lightweight plastic shields that collect leakage and protect clothing. They provide gentle and continuous pressure to arouse the nipples, helping to bring out inverted nipples for more comfortable and successful nursing.

Sore and cracked nipples are also a common problem with nursing mothers. Nipple shields can help. They’re thin plastic shields that fit directly over the nipples, and the baby latches onto these instead of directly on the mother’s nipples.

Due to many circumstances, breast-feeding may not always be possible. In these cases, many mothers are choosing to use either an electric of manual breast pump to express their milk and still feed their baby naturally.

Another major problem experienced during pregnancy is vericose veins or swollen, achy legs. Hormonal changes and extra weight during pregnancy contribute to greater stress on the venous system. Maternity pantyhose help legs feel much better by reducing swelling and leg fatigue, and increasing circulation.

Low back pain is another common complaint of expectant mothers. Pregnancy belts are available to provide relief.

25. Wheeled Chairs and Scooters -Manual & Power
Manual & Power......Today’s modern manual and power wheelchairs are available in an almost unlimited variety of models, sizes and configurations. Depending on your environment, abilities and its intended use, a wheelchair can be prescribed to accommodate you and your specific requirements.

Manual wheelchairs range from heavy duty models with 30-inch-wide seats to pediatric chairs as small as 10 inches wide. The heavy duty models are provided with additional frame reinforcement and stronger components, while the child’s chair incorporates adjustability to accommodate growing.

There are also a variety of seat heights available. “Tall” frame chairs are built higher off the ground, for those with long legs; “hemi” height chairs are lower so they can be propelled by foot; and sport chair are in a category by themselves. Sport chairs are lightweight, utilizing different alloys to provide the exceptional strength necessary to withstand the rigors of active sports. They often incorporate unique features, components and adjustments to assist the user in obtaining the level of performance they desire.

Power wheelchairs retain most features of their manual counterparts. They are often classed by the complexity and adjustability of their electronic components. The simple power wheelchair offers only basic adjustments to speed, while the most advanced have parameter adjustments to virtually all performance aspects of the chair. The most common type of control is the joystick; simply put, whichever direction your push the control knob with your hand is the direction the chair travels. Unfortunately, not everyone has the hand control or coordination to operate a joystick, so alternatives have been designed. Head controls can be mounted to the wheelchair to enable operation with only head movements, and sip-and-puff controls operate only on breath control.

26. Wheelchairs and Scooters - Add On Power Units
Add on Power units......To economically convert a manual chair into a powered one requires add-on power units. Basically, an add-on power unit consists of two 12-volt gel batteries which are mounted under the chair. These provide power to the drive motors. The drive wheels, when in contact with the rear wheels of the chair, propel the chair in the desired direction as indicated by the joystick commands.

Due to the inherent nature of these units, however, not all manual wheelchairs are suitable for use with a power add-on unit.

27. Wheelchairs and Scooters - Standard Equipment
Standard Equipment.......Standard equipment on most manual and power wheelchairs includes vinyl or nylon “sling” upholstery. This flexible material on the seat and back allows ease of folding, but provides only very basic seating requirements.

Virtually everyone using a wheelchair for extended periods of times requires some additional seating accessories. Increased comfort can often be provided using a simple foam cushion, but comfort is only one reason for seating systems.

Prolonged sitting, especially with incorrect posture, can lead to very serious medical complications such as pressure sores, and even bone structure disalignment.

More advanced contoured foam, or gel- or air-filled cushions are often used in conjunction with a type of contoured back system; this combination promotes proper sitting while still accommodating the individual’s needs. The modular design of these products provide a “custom fit” result, and allows them to be installed on virtually all types of wheelchairs.

28. Wheelchairs and Scooters - Batteries
Batteries......Not all wheelchair batteries are created equal. Wheelchair and scooter batteries are different from car batteries. A car battery is designed to provide a large burst of power for a relatively short period of time. A wheelchair, on the other hand, needs a constant rate of power for prolonged periods of time.

Wheelchair and scooter batteries are available in both gel and standard lead/acid styles. Both offer similar performance and a lifespan of about 1-1/2 years. Gel batteries, however, require no maintenance other than regular charging. Some models of equipment and their changing systems are designed for use with a specific type of battery. Please consult the owner’s manual to assure correct battery sizing and type for your power wheelchair or scooter.

29. Wheelchairs and Scooters - Scooters
Scooters.......Scooters are available in 3- or 4-wheel configurations, and front or rear wheel drive. 3-wheel models are preferred for indoor use or enclosed surroundings, since they’re generally smaller and more agile due to their tighter turning radius. However, when used as intended, these 3-wheel scooters are certainly safe and suitable for use outdoors, but a 4-wheel model does offer more stability on uneven terrain.

Rear wheel scooters are generally superior to front wheel drive, since most of the scooter’s weight and the weight of the operator rest on the rear wheels, to promote better traction. Front wheel drive scooters tend to be smaller, lighter, and perform best when used inside or only on hard, level and dry surfaces.

Scooter controls are mounted on the steering tiller, with thumb-operated directional controls, battery level indicator and on/off switch easily within reach. Power is supplied by two 12-volt rechargeable batteries which can provide up to 15 miles of use on a single charge.

30. Elevators and Lifts
Elevators and Lifts......For people with physical disabilities, there are many types and styles of elevators and lifts.

The porch lift is one of the most common types of vertical lift; it’s installed outside and usually lifts from three to five feet allowing access to the main floor level of the home.

Another type of lift is the elevator. It’s installed indoors and generally lifts from the main floor to the second floor. There are several models and prices ranges for elevators.

The stair glide is another form of lift, transporting one person at a time along the stairway. It has a swivel seat and seatbelt, and is installed on the existing flight of stairs.

A wheelchair platform lift is also installed on an existing flight of stairs, and accommodates a wheelchair and its rider.

An assessment by a product consultant is the best approach to making the right decision about the purchase of an elevator or lift.

31. Lift Chairs & Beds - Lift Chairs
Lift Chairs......A lift chair is an excellent addition to the home for those who have difficulty getting up from an easy chair. A simple touch of the hand control activates the power lift feature, which gently and slowly tilts the chair to move the seated person to a standing position. These chairs usually have the added recline feature, which is also activated by the hand control, reclining the chair into various positions. The fully reclined position is comfortable for sleeping. Optional features include penetrating heat and soothing massage motion to relieve tired, aching muscles.

From economy to deluxe models, these chairs are available in an extensive selection of styles, sizes and designer colors and fabrics to complement any decor.

33. Neck Pillows
Pillows......If we don’t suffer from neck or back problems, the chances are we know someone who does. A large number of people have these difficulties. But the problems can be eased to some degree by how we sleep. In other words, getting correct support as we sleep. This is where neck pillows can help.

Proper head and neck support helps to keep the spine correctly aligned as we sleep. Proper alignment means less back and neck pain; fewer problems with spinal discs. Other benefits may include relief of headache, arthritic pain, neck, shoulder, and TMJ pain. Various models such as water filled, foam filled, and polyfill, in many patented designs, allows the choice for proper support in any sleeping position

34. Bath Safety Products
Bath Safety Products.....There are many products on the market that can make your bathroom a safer place for everyone. Bars on the walls around the bathtub can be installed vertically, horizontally or diagonally. They’re available in a variety of colors and finishes---including a non-slip finish to provide a gripping surface even when wet.

The clamp-on tub grab bar offers added stability when getting in and out of the tub; installation is easy and no special tools are required.

For people who have difficulty sitting in the tub or standing in the shower, a bath seat may be the answer. They have non-slip foot pieces, but if added security is desired, suction feet are also available. And, an easily installed telephone shower is a perfect accessory when using a bath seat.

Other safety products for the bathroom include oversized bath safety mats to help prevent slipping in the tub. Further safety products feature safety strips which adhere to the bottom of the bathtub.

To make toiletting easier for those with difficulty getting up and down from the height of a conventional toilet, there are raised toilet seats. They’re available in various heights, from two to six inches, to meet each individual’s needs. Plus, models can be chosen that fit the new elongated toilet bowls.

For further assistance, one can also choose toilet armrests, or a vertical safety pole which is firmly anchored to floor and ceiling. This pole also has the added benefit of taking up very little space.

All of these bath safety products can be viewed in a showroom setting.

35. Mastectomy Products
Mastectomy Products......There are several different mastectomy products. A mastectomy product could be a prosthesis or breast form that approximates the breast in shape and weight. The breast form is often temporary, used until the doctor says it is time to fit a prosthesis or permanent breast form. They help with post-mastectomy complications by helping to reduce swelling, minimizing hematoma formation, and reducing possible adhesive tape burns. Afterwards, when the body has gone through a period of healing, a prosthesis can be fitted.

Prostheses are available in a number of varieties and shapes, depending on a person’s specific surgery needs. A prosthesis is made from material intended to approximate natural tissue in movement, body temperature, skin colour, feel, and weight. Choosing not to use a prosthesis, or wearing one that is either too light or heavier than it should be, can result in complications: spinal curvature, shoulder drop, and muscle contractions resulting in back or neck pain. It leads to problems of balance.

A correctly weighted prosthesis helps provide the balance necessary for posture, and assists in anchoring a bra, keeping it from riding up or down. It takes time to get use to the feel of the prosthesis. It’s best to begin wearing it for only a few hours a day, then increasing the length of time it’s worn.

Other mastectomy products are “sleeves” and “pumps”. In mastectomy surgery, the lymph nodes are removed. This means fluid builds up without a lymph vessel to absorb it. In order to keep swelling down, a doctor may prescribe a compression sleeve or pump.

36. Massagers
Massagers......It’s not always easy or affordable to get a personal massage. However, there are massagers available that can help, and while they can’t carry on a conversation, they can do the job. In fact, many of them are used by health professionals.

These massagers are electrical, or battery powered, and can deliver a rhythmic, deep muscle massage much like the firm action of a trained masseur. They’re useful for most areas of the body, from the soles of the feet to the neck. For example, to work the pressure and trigger points of the spine, a back massage, a person would sit in a high back chair such as a recliner or rocker and place the massager behind them and lean back. You would control the depth of the massage by how firmly you leaned back. For working the neck or legs, a person would lie down on a bed and place the massager under the neck or legs. For the feet, a person would sit in a chair and set the massager beneath or on top of their feet. You may want to cover the massager with a small towel when using it, though it isn’t necessary.

A massager can help in a number of ways: relieving tension, easing stiffness and fatigue, and working muscles to loosen them.

37. Exercise Balls
Exercise Balls ......It’s the simplest of things: a ball. Yet it can be, and has been, an effective health and exercise tool for centuries. It’s fun too! When we speak of exercise balls, though, we’re speaking of balls designed to help us build strength, exercise our muscles, and relieve tension as well.

An exercise ball can be anywhere from small to large, depending on its purpose. For example, there are hand exercise balls. These are small, gel-like balls with various densities, and are used to exercise the palm and fingers, and in so doing help problems of arthritis, relieve tension, and to build up or rebuild strength and dexterity.

The other type of exercise ball is much larger. The size can vary, but roughly speaking they can be as small as a beachball, to as large as three feet in diameter. They are air-filled and very light, and are made with a therapeutic purpose in mind. Certain stretching and other exercises are based around them. In both cases, the exercise ball is a low impact, fairly easy but effective way to exercise.

38. S.A.D. Lights
S.A.D. Lights......During the autumn and winter months, some people experience what is known as Seasonal Affective Disorder, or S.A.D. This is a depression not usually experienced during the spring and summer months. S.A.D. is believed to be caused by the shorter days; in other words, less natural light. Research has shown that this condition can improve with light therapy, or phototherapy. Just thirty minutes of light therapy has been shown to help 60 to 80 percent of S.A.D. patients.

S.A.D. lights are designed to provide full spectrum light, which approximates the sun’s natural light. There are a number of types, from bulbs for retro-fitting old lights, to light boxes which are designed to provide environmentally safe sunlight. In some cases, desk lamps are available as well.

It’s best to speak to a health care professional first before using S.A.D. Lights. It’s important to be clear on the specific use and length of time exposed to the lights before using them, and to be certain there is no existing medical condition that could cause difficulties.

39. Back Care Products - Back
Back.....Various types of back cushions are available for use in car seats, arm chairs, office chairs or wheelchairs. They range from a lumbar pad or roll---which is ideal in lower back positioning and support---to a full upright support, to provide extra protection in reducing whiplash-related problems.

One of the most prescribed supports in the Abus form. It’s been highly effective in relieving back pain associated with many conditions and disorders. These back supports are portable and can be easily transported for use in the car, office and home.

There are many styles of specially designed office chairs which support the spine and lower back, thus encouraging good posture. One such office chair is the backless chair---or kneeling chair, as it’s commonly called. It reduces stress and strain on the stomach muscles usually cause by hunched, constricted sitting. The backless chair helps eliminate this poor sitting posture.

Some back problems may be relieved by wearing a support garment, of which there are many. For rigid support, a corset type is often prescribed. A less restrictive approach is an elastic support. Many of these supports are now worn as a preventative measure, to protect the back during stressing activities.

40. Back Care Products - Surgical
Surgical.....One of the many different types of surgical supports is the Hernia Support. Hernia or rupture is a condition that can occur at any age in either gender, at a variety of abdominal locations. The most common is the inguinal hernia which occurs in the groin of a male; it may appear on the right side or the left, or on both as a double hernia. The ideal hernia support is made of a flexible elastic fabric which is worn low on the hips, and has pressure pads that can be adjusted to the hernia site.

There is also the Abdominal Support which lifts a sagging abdomen and returns internal organs to their proper position. It’s designed to lift upward and inward, relieving strain on the diaphragm, heart and lungs. The abdominal support further acts as a reminder to “hold in” while exercising the abdominal muscles to help restore their tone.

It is also frequently worn in the treatment of an abdominal hernia following surgery, by new mothers after delivery, or for pendulous abdomens. And for many people with weak abdominal muscles, wearing this support can ease lower back pain.

The Shoulder Immobilizer is another type of surgical support. After a shoulder separation, the wearing of a shoulder immobilizer provides arm support, while restricting shoulder and upper arm movement. The shoulder straps of the cradle-arm-sling cross in the back, offering extra arm and wrist support.

And one other type of surgical support is for the cervical area of the body. Injury to the cervical spine, usually due to trauma such as whiplash, may be mild or severe. For mild cervical injuries requiring non-rigid support and stability, a soft foam collar is usually worn. For the more serious injury or condition, a semi-rigid or rigid support may be necessary; one style is the Philadelphia Collar---a two-piece collar system that’s velcroed front to back, cradling the chin to help reduce movement.

41. Bladder Control Diapers
Diapers.....Bladder control refers to a person’s ability to control urination. If you are able to urinate only when you wish, your bladder control is good. However, if you can’t always feel or control urination you have a condition which is shared by many, called urinary incontinence.

While the cause of incontinence will differ with gender, age and medical history, the feelings of embarrassment, helplessness and fear are common to every incontinent person. The fear of “accidents” or the discovery of the problem by others cause some incontinent people to become unnecessarily housebound---isolating themselves from friends, community and even family members.

It’s essential that you seek the advice of your doctor on the treatment or management of your condition. With the proper protection there’s no reason why incontinence should prevent you or those you care for from going about their daily activities, comfortably and with confidence. Containment products for men and women are available in a wide variety of disposable or reusable pads and briefs which look and feel like normal undergarments. Unlike the bulky products of the past, today’s form-fitting choices offer complete protection, in many different absorbency levels and shapes, and can be worn unnoticed.

42. Bladder Control - Waterproof Sheets
Waterproof Sheets.....The incontinent person can benefit from the protection of good quality waterproof bed sheets. They’re available in different types and styles to accommodate various sized beds...ranging from a drain sheet that covers only the center area of the mattress, to full mattress protection.

There are several types of drain sheets used on the top of bed sheets rather than underneath. One kind has a silicone film that repels moisture to prevent soiled bedding, yet it breathes to help keep the user’s skin cool, dry and comfortable.

Another type of draw sheet is the disposable, which has an absorbent top and a vinyl backing to protect the bed sheeting. And there are also many different sized disposable bed pads that also have an absorbent top and vinyl backing.

43. Bladder Control - Catheters
Catheters......For people who cannot use liners or briefs to contain an incontinence problem, there are three common catheter systems available. One system is the male external system, consisting of a sheath that rolls onto the penis. It’s similar to a condom and connects to a urine collection bag---a leg bag for day use, or a night bag. There are several types of condom catheters available.

The second type of catheter system is Intermittent Catheterization. It’s the periodic insertion of a catheter---either plastic or rubber---which enters the bladder. Intermittent catheterization is available to men and women. This procedure should be done at regular intervals.

The Foley Catheter, or indwelling catheter, is the third type. It’s inserted into the bladder and stays in place for a period of time determined by the doctor or nurse. This catheter also converts into a leg bag or night bag.

There are many different types of Foley catheters, and different coatings for them. Teflon-coated models are for short-term use, silicone-coated or all-silicone are for longer-term use. There are also many different sizes, depending on the urethra which is determined by the physician. The average adult urethra is 16 or 18 french. Another feature of the Foley catheter is the balloon; this is either a 5-c.c or 30-c.c size, and is normally inflated by a nurse to prevent the balloon from pulling out of the bladder. When using the intermittent or the Foley catheter, a lubricating gel should be used to make the insertion of the catheter more comfortable.

There are also many different types and sizes of urine collection bags. The leg bags are designed for day use and are available in many sizes, styles and qualities. Some bags are vinyl which are good for a day, while others are made of latex to last for several days. There are also leg bags designed for many kinds of uses, including the wheelchair sports user. For night use, there are bags which are generally of a larger size, and are clipped to the side of the bed.

Developing a personal routine for changing the catheter, as well as checking and cleaning the skin of the collection bags will help get the best results more easily. There are a number of accessory products for cleaning and maintaining the catheter system...as well as personal care creams, deodorizers and cleansers.
