Looking Back... Looking
Ahead
July was a fun month with all that 35
degree weather. Eskimos taking us on an emotional roller coaster. The World
Cup Triathlon and the Trappers on an absolute tear in the PCL's Northern
Division. Loved it.
But August has the makings of a great
summer month too. Maybe the weather didn't kick things off too well with
temps in the single digits, but things still look pretty good.
The Under -19 Woman's World cup of
Soccer hits our town mid-month and it's just one more opportunity to prove
what a great sports town this is. To this point the organizers are thrilled
with the ticket pre-sales, claiming to have sold well over 25 thousand
tournament passes. Let's hope they can build on that and pack Commonwealth
Stadium.
The Eskimos always provide entertaining
football, and this season's been no exception. A little erratic at times
offensively but hardly dull. We all know that August sets the table for the
Labor Day classic in Calgary and I think this year's squad should be able to
put it together in time for the big run to the playoffs. Not only that, but
there must be some massive pressure on the club with the Grey Cup here this
November. But they'll be all right.
I can sense that this could be the
season for the Trappers. After weather forced the team to play 20 plus games
on the road to start the season, they really cranked it up in June and July.
Trap manager John Russell deserves full marks for guiding the club through
the rough spots and also for letting the team play wonderfully entertaining
offensive baseball. While I'm not a big fan of THAT stat comparing the
Trapper home season totals to the NY Yankees ( apples and oranges comparison
to me!), that really should keep the fans in the stands down the stretch.
That's a nice turn-around, especially since many fans and most of the media
didn't pay much attention to them in April or May. That was then and this is
now!
Get out there and enjoy the rest of the
summer!
