Report On Activities

Category:Editorials (Neil Lymer)
Published Date: April 2003

Recently, I had the pleasure of joining the Warwick family in the ongoing publication of Billy’s Guide.  This very magazine was started over 30 years ago by Edmonton’s sport legend Billy Warwick and remains under the command of Copper Jacket William Warwick Jr.  We have recently made a few changes in the magazine with more editions to hit the streets than ever before.  In fact, we will be publishing up to 25,000 magazines this month, available as always, through local restaurants and lounges.  And another first in April, we will be delivering a copy of Billy’s Guide directly to the door of your business.  Check out our new look and you will be hooked!

My deal is to write about business stories and report on the activities of the commercial real estate sector.  I come into daily contact with many players in the downtown office scene and Edmonton is beginning to see a shift in the downtown matrix relating to office space.  Many existing tenants are experiencing “sticker shock” when renewing their leases this year.  5 years ago, both the rental rate and operating costs were almost half of today’s rate.  Very fortunately, there are many leasing alternatives located outside the downtown core and these buildings are locally owned and managed.  Both Melcor Developments Ltd. and Trans America Group have done a wonderful job attracting quality tenants out of the downtown core into truly first class buildings.

As for downtown, Oxford Properties Group remains the premier office/retail space provider.  Take the time to walk through their two separate food courts and the enormous new pedway system connecting the downtown retail sector.  Oxford should be saluted for their investment into Edmonton’s downtown core.

As for our short-term outlook, I doubt the war in Iraq will have any impact on our local economy simply due to the fact it should be over quickly.  Gas prices always rise in the spring and usually peak before each long weekend even without Middle East turmoil.  I expect the same to hold true this spring.
