The Write Idea

Whether the designation stands for a complete home office, a central command post located on a section of kitchen counter or a quaint little desk located in a quiet spot, we all know that every modern home needs a designated office space - and every office needs a desk.

The desk is the focal point of an office - it is the pivotal point from which all activity and style emanates. The desk is the key element grounding your office space. In today's world of home fashion the home office is big business. Designers, manufacturers and builders alike know that every home needs to establish a space, large or small, that is designated to the home office.

When it comes to selecting that all-important key element - the desk - we are fortunate in enjoying an abundance of choices. The right choice provides a wonderful writing surface that will anchor all of our office needs, suit our decorative style and fit into the space allocated.

So what is your write idea for a desk? In general, men will often prefer a larger surface - a classic desk. Perhaps a traditional handsome wooden unit designed to accommodate manly business, with ample surface space and large drawers for filing and storing paperwork. Women, on the other hand, will often gravitate to a smaller surface, such as a writing desk. For anyone with a smaller space, writing desks are a popular option. Attractive desks are available in almost any finish and decorative style.

A few years ago a writing desk was not a viable option, as a desk (in most of our homes) must accommodate a computer. Desktop computers were generally too large for a writing desk's smaller surface. Today, almost half of the computers bought for home offices are laptops or notebooks - computers that occupy a greatly diminished footprint. We also have flat screen monitors that reduce surface space even when we opt for a traditional PC.

Other options include the office armoire - a fold-out or fold-down unit in which can you can tuck away your entire office when you are done. This is an excellent option for a smaller home where a dining room, bedroom or even the living room may have to perform double duty. Who would know that a multi million dollar industry may be tucked into to an attractive piece of furniture that looks elegant and perfectly at home in the corner of the living room?

Manufacturers are getting very creative and ingenious at designing multi-use pieces. There is certainly no shortage of stylish options available today from your favorite furniture store. Regardless of the style of your desk, be sure that it will accommodate your desired computer unit and that it is comfortable and ergonomically designed for the long hours you may spend sitting at this piece writing your memoirs, paying the bills or surfing the 'Net. An under-mounted keyboard shelf is a "must have" to save surface space. Many of us also find a lower keyboard more comfortable to work with. Whatever the write idea is for your home office, a desk must work as good as it looks.
