No matter what language a person speaks when they receive flowers it is a message directly from the heart. The recipient receives a communication of caring and concern. Over the years there have been numerous lists and meanings assigned to flowers. During Victorian times people assigned special meanings to different varieties as a way to pass secret messages to lovers and friends. Studies have proven that employees who receive flowers at their work place have a much higher rate of productivity, plus are happier. Still today many ‘experts’ can’t agree on precise meanings, and it seems that meanings change depending on the area or the culture. So as you read the following meanings don’t be dismayed if a meaning you thought is different from this list, because that is the beauty of flowers they can be interchanged and altered to suit the occasion. One thing for sure the message remains worldwide-- the message of thoughtfulness and affection is conveyed. Here is a list of some of the most common meanings:

Amaryllis: pride, splendid beauty

Apple Blossom: good fortune

Aster: symbol of love, daintiness

Baby’s Breath: pure of heart

Bachelor’s Button: hope

Bluebell: constancy

Buttercup: riches

Crocus: joy, cheerfulness

Daffodil: unrequited love, regard
