DEMYSTIFYING CHRONIC WHIPLASH | Category: | Safety Editorials (Guest) | | Published Date: | July/Aug. 2005 | |
CommentsMYST has a great reputation of being one of the best puzzle-adventure computer games of all time. Many chipheads and hackers believe the 1993 game was the first interactive platform to evoke true mood and to have puzzles that were solvable in a logical non-gimmick-like fashion. The other MIST (an acronymn for Minor Impact Soft Tissue Injury associated with chronic whiplash pain) is an apparent insurance ideology that is evoking a bad reputation amongst many health professionals and academics.
MIST THEORY
Essentially, MIST theory appears to have been invented by big United States auto insurers in the 1990’s. MIST advocates contend that it is inherently impossible for you or your loved one to have a bad whiplash injury in a low-damage car accident. Furthermore, they claim that any patients who experience pain beyond ninety-days or so following an accident are not suffering from bona fide body injuries, but are in reality suffering from psycho-social problems. In short: your pain is all in your head. Needless to say, many genuine patients of all ages, shapes and sizes, who suffer from chronic whiplash pain, who have objective clinical problems, and who are unable to return to their pre-accident jobs or recreational activities, are bamboozled by all this MIST.
MIST REVELATIONS
MIST dogma has been challenged by independent researchers and scientific reviewers and their recent work has yielded the following:
* Your whiplash damage cannot be linked directly to how hard your vehicle was hit. We have all seen one hockey guy get hammered into the boards but skate away as though nothing happened. And we have seen another get girly-pushed and have his shoulder pop right out of socket.
* Your whiplash damage cannot be linked directly to how much dollar damage your vehicle sustained. We have also seen football dudes tear knee cartilage just by planting their knee awkwardly without even being nailed by another player.
* Your whiplash damage cannot be defined simply as an itty-bitty sprain or strain. We all know how a tiny chip problem in the fuel injector can throw off the whole engine. The neck and its nervous system which control posture and movement are even more sensitive and complex. Small injuries can cause big pain problems.
MIST HELPFUL HINTS
Some MYST players needed hints in order to ensure fun game-play. If you have sustained a neck and back injury secondary to an automobile accident, and you feel lost in the MIST of claim-hassling red-tape and/or puzzling whiplash pain, some helpful hints are these: first, be sure to seek the opinion of a qualified independent health professional. Second, a great choice is to see a physical therapist, as he/she is uniquely qualified to assess your soft tissue injuries, and in conjunction with your family physician, should be able to give you the straight goods on the nature of your injury, your expected recovery time, and what treatments you will need in order to get you back to enjoying your favorite adventure game, computer-based or otherwise.
