Public hearings on baby walkers to be held in early December

OTTAWA - A Board of Review established to inquire into the nature and characteristics of baby walkers will be holding hearings in Ottawa December 4, 5, 7 and 8, 2006 to hear evidence regarding the prohibition of baby walkers.

These hearings will be open to the public for observation. For the location, detailed schedule of the hearings and additional information on the Board of Review.

In 2004, Canada became the first country to prohibit the advertising, sale and importation of baby walkers. Under the provision of the Hazardous Products Act, the Minister of Health was required to establish a Board of Review to inquire into the nature and characteristics of baby walkers. On June 2, 2006 the Minister of Health announced the establishment of the three-member Board. The Board has received 12 submissions from parents, non-governmental organizations and government regarding the prohibition on baby walkers.

Upon the completion of their inquiry, the Board members will submit to the Minister a report containing recommendations. The Canadian prohibition of baby walkers remains in force throughout the duration of the Board's inquiry.
