The Graston Technique
Capilano Rehab has recently added Graston Technique® to the health services they offer patients. The Graston Technique, originally developed by athletes, is an innovative, patented form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that enables clinicians to effectively break down scar tissue and fascial restrictions. This innovative procedure allows them to detect and treat areas of “scar tissue” or adhesions in muscules, tendons and ligaments that can lead to pain & dysfunction. The Graston Technique, researched at Ball Memorial Hospital and Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, was conceived by an athlete who suffered a debilitating knee injury while water skiing. He applied his professional background in machining to create the initial Graston Technique instruments to treat his soft tissue injury.
Graston Technique® can be used for treating many conditions, including but not limited to: carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), rotator cuff tendonitis, cervical strain, and scar tissue fibrosis.
Graston Technique® is effective because it uses a stainless steel instrument that glides along muscles and is able to identify knots or bands of scar tissue. The instrument can then be used to “break up” this restriction. Stretching exercises are then used to promote the realignment of the fibers so that they behave more like normal, healthy tissue.
The Graston Technique®
Decreases overall time of treatment
Fosters faster rehabilitation/recovery
Reduces need for anti-inflammatory medication
Resolves chronic conditions thought to be permanent
