Calgary International Writers Festival
CommentsNow the third largest literary festival of its kind in Canada, PanCanadian WordFest started in Calgary and Banff in 1996 with the assistance of the following founding organizations: The Banff Centre for the Arts, Mount Royal College, the Writers Guild of Alberta and the Calgary Public Library.
Now celebrating its seventh Anniversary, the non-profit Festival has its own board of directors and is still actively supported by The Banff Centre for the Arts and in different ways by the other founding organizations. PanCanadian Petroleum Limited has been the Title Sponsor from the outset and has extended its sponsorship for another three years. The Festival also runs with the support and donations of many other corporations, organizations, individuals and government bodies. Attracting over 8,000 visitors in its fifth year alone, PanCanadian WordFest has flourished since its inception six years ago. Marquee writers have attended the Festival, including award-winners Margaret Atwood, Karen Connelly, Roddy Doyle, Richard Ford, Mavis Gallant, Greg Hollingshead, Guy Vanderhaeghe and the late Canadian literary icon Mordecai Richler. PanCanadian WordFest has become an internationally recognized event that is truly a celebration of the written and spoken word.
