Three major industrial accidents reported in the city in the past month should send chills down the spines of employers and employees alike.
The first happened at the city’s indoor pool when a female worker fell into the empty pool while working on annual maintenance. The second was at a construction site where a man was reportedly clipped by a forklift moving rebar. And the third happened in the course of renovations to a former downtown hotel where a man was severely injured.
How these accidents could have been avoided is for occupational health and safety, the employers and the employees to determine. Each of them was extremely serious and, as bad as they were, could have been worse.
Three people are off work right now recovering from major injuries. Their work sites are missing three valuable employees and those who witnessed the events are also recovering from shock.
By their very nature, accidents cannot be avoided. However, both employers and employees have to be vigilant, attentive, alert, conscientious and careful in all work situations.
