New Website Design

I hope you enjoy the look of our new site and also find the information useful. Useful information is key, having the site redesigned with database hooks allows for greater control of misinformation, accurate submissions and fewer delays in design.

We have redefined the web site to allow individuals to submit links, receives points, easy edit ( for clients) and great manipulation of content.

The computer code that makes up these WebPages is like any other language: the more words available in a given vocabulary, the more refined the expression. The code that makes up web pages (HTML, XHTML, CSS, etc.) is continually being expanded and developed to take advantage of new features in the code languages. Using an older web browser with this website is equal to a first grader talking to a college professor—the fundamentals are there but the professor is clearly restrained by the child's lack of understanding. I chose not to sacrifice the quality of this website by handicapping it for use with older browsers, and this means that on any pre-5.0 browsers, this site will be virtually unusable. Alas, this is not a true dilemma, as browser upgrades are free and easily accessible, and generally do not require any more hardware resources than the older versions before them. Plus, according to our site logs, about 95% of you are using acceptable browsers already.

This site uses Cascading Style Sheets extensively and it is important that whatever browser you choose supports this standard completely. We have made quite an effort to ensure that this site will work on any current versions of all popular browsers, however if you are using the current version of a browser and have problems using this site, please let us know about it and be as specific as possible, including what OS and browser you are using.

Flash

While Flash is no longer used in an essential manner, having the current version installed on your computer will ensure that you have the full intended experience. You can download it for free.

Screen Resolution and Color Depth

This site is designed for a minimum screen resolution of 800x600 and is best viewed at 1024x768. According to our site logs, only 4% use 640x480 so we have decided not to support it. Sorry, switch your Display settings, its not that hard. This site is best viewed with a color depth of 16 bits, but the standard 8-bit display should work fine.

Explanation of Design

This new redesign was made with the idea of this site as a tool was the strongest influence while working on it. Rather than focus on flashy graphic design, We instead chose to go for simplicity in the design, using design elements only to facilitate and further the intent of the information being presented, the ultimate goal being maximum usability. Unlike most websites, our goal is not to keep you here as long as possible using every method at our disposal, actually the opposite is true—we wish for you to spend as little time here as possible, and that means easily accessible information, simple presentation and navigation, and faster downloading pages.

Most pages are about 20% of the size their counterparts were on the old website, meaning that for people with slower connections, they should load significantly faster. Extensive modifications were also made to make sure the site works properly under many different operating systems and browsers, and most pages are no longer graphic or Flash dependent.

The flow and structure of the website has been changed entirely in an attempt to make particular information easier to find with a more specific primary navigation system and deeper subsections within the primary topics. It might not be much to look at, but I hope you will find it much more useful than the old site.

Tips

Most sections have their own introductions that take care of just about every concern we can foresee. I would suggest keeping track of these because not all changes will be announced as a news item, and you will find some new content only through your own investigations.

Speaking of new content, there are many sections that are begging for submissions from you to fill them, such as the current projects and events, publications, etc. Email all pertinent information to info@ifindinfo.com.

Also, some people have remarked that the text on this site is too small for their taste. Well, it is an easy problem to fix, as every web browser has some feature that allows you to adjust the text size—its just that sometimes its a little buried in menus and you probably didn't even know it was there. In most browsers there is a "view" menu that has some sub-menu titled "text zoom" or "text size" which enables you to either enlarge or reduce the text size. Please do this to suit your taste.
